School and Scouts

The Whaley Historic House Museum offers programs designed to enhance the classroom experience. Our specialty is using the resources and artifacts at the Whaley House to help students obtain a better understanding of history in general, as well as historical facts about the region and era.

Grant: Funding is available for transportation reimbursement up to $100 to public schools located in Genesee County, Michigan. This opportunity is made possible through a generous grant from the Veit Trust.

Thinking Like an Historian: This program follows the Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum for grades 3 and 4 and utilizes the content in Unit 3, Lesson 1 (3rd Grade) and Unit 1, Lesson 1 (4th Grade) in addition to educating students about Michigan and national history at the turn of the twentieth century. The expectation of this program is to teach students how historians go about investigating the past. By looking at artifacts in the Whaley House, students will learn how to draw their own historical conclusions The program includes a presentation on the work of the historian, exercises in which students interact with museum artifacts, a full tour of the House, and a take home assessment. (25 student maximum; roughly 2 1/2 hours total; $3 per student with chaperones free)

Why don't you make a day of your field trip. The Whaley House is located just down the street from the Flint Cultural Center!

The Whaley House is also a great place to bring scouting groups. Our museum can meet the needs of a variety of scouting badges. Contact us for more information.
